This course is for all employees working in trenching and excavation. OSHA requires the employer to have a “competent person” on-site who is trained and knowledgeable in soil analysis, protective systems, and the requirements of the standard. This one-day course meets OSHA 1926 Construction Standard for Trenching & Excavation “Competent Person” as required by OSHA for employers working in trenches.  This course also includes Hands On training.

Learning Objectives:

By taking this course and successfully completing it, you will:

  • Understand the definition of a competent person
  • Know the specific qualifications for naming someone a competent person
  • Be able to correctly evaluate an employee for the purpose of naming him/her a CP
  • Understand the responsibilities, expertise and training of the competent person.
  • Be aware of the sloping and benching requirements for types A, B and C soils
  • Know how to locate and use the shoring tables for both timber shoring and aluminum hydraulic shoring
  • Understand the basic requirements for using shields and trench boxes as an alternative to shoring or sloping

Speaker Bio

William Frost has been with Frost Training & Consulting LLC since 2008, working primarily with Public Works Departments and Municipalities all over the state of South Carolina, as well as the South Carolina Department of Transportation. He provides on-site classroom instruction of applicable state and federal safety regulations to employees, on-site evaluations/inspections, written program development, and other safety consultation services. William has taught for Clemson University’s Transportation, Technology and Transfer Service since 2012.  William is a licensed SC DHEC Asbestos Instructor, as well as a Georgia Tech Authorized Outreach Trainer for General Industry and Construction.  He is a certified National Safety Council Flagger Instructor, has a partnership with the Municipal Association of South Carolina, and serves on the Water Environment Association of South Carolina’s safety committee.

Schedule

Class registration is from 8:00-8:30. The class will begin at 8:30. Lunch will be provided. We should adjourn around 4:00pm.

Course Fee

The registration fee for the workshop is $225.00 per person. All South Carolina city, county, or state employees receive a LTAP scholarship registration fee of $145.00. The fee includes course materials, break refreshments, and the noon luncheon.

This course has a maximum of 50 students, and will be capped at this number.  Advanced registration is encouraged so that an accurate estimate of the number of workshop participants can be obtained.  Workshops with low advanced registration will be subject to cancellation.

Who Should Attend

Anyone who performs or manages any type of excavation to install, repair or replace underground utilities including water and wastewater systems, gas, phone and electric utilities. Water and wastewater utility field personnel, safety program managers, utility inspectors, contractors, supervisors and managers will benefit from this course.

Payment Policy

UPDATED 2/15/23 – The Transportation Technology Transfer Service now accepts Electronic Check (ACH) payments in addition to credit card payments. While credit card payments are still the preferred payment method, you now have the Electronic Check (ACH) option. Your payment must be received within 5 business days of your registration. If your registration payment is not received by then, you will not be guaranteed registration for the conference.

Cancellation Policy

If you cancel your registration more than 72 hours before a class, your registration fee will be refunded, less a $35 processing fee. If you do not cancel before the 72 hour deadline your registration fee will not be refunded. You may send a substitute in your place, provided that you inform us of the substitute’s name no later than 24 hours before the training.  No-shows will not have their registration fee refunded.
