Course Description:

In this workshop, participants will learn the importance of a snow and ice maintenance plan, management of the program, snow and ice control procedures, properties of snow and ice, and appropriate treatments, common deicing chemicals and alternative materials, winter storm preparation, and storm removal equipment and operations. You will also learn the importance of partnering with other agencies and how working with the media will bring success to your program.

Course Instructor:

Ken Martin is a 34 year veteran employee with Charlotte Department of Transportation. He has worked in traffic operations and currently is the Deputy Streets Division Superintendent in charge of all operations and the Snow and Ice Plan for the City of Charlotte. Ken has a B.A Degree in Business Administration from University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Ken is a hands- on manager that has worked his way up through the ranks and understands the field demands of employees in critical and emergency situations. His specialties are communication, and creating an environment where employees can be their best and excel within their own capabilities.

Schedule:

Class registration is from 7:30-8:00am. The class will begin at 8:00. Lunch will be provided. We should adjourn around 4:00pm.

Class Topics and Learning Objectives:

• Identify the purpose of a Snow and Ice Plan
• Discuss the importance of good weather information
• Describe they type of equipment, maintenance needs, and materials.
• Discuss common employee responsibilities
• Discuss basic snow and ice fighting techniques
• Discuss the importance of great customer service, partnerships, and media relations

Who Should Attend:

Anyone who performs or manages snow and ice removal and maintenance for their respective city or agency, managers as well as field personnel will take away important information and ideas to make their plan all it can be for all concerned.

Course Fee:

The registration fee for the workshop is $135.00 per person. All South Carolina city, county, or state employees receive a LTAP scholarship registration fee of $50.00. The fee includes course materials, break refreshments, and the noon luncheon.

This course has a maximum of 40 students, and will be capped at this number.  Advanced registration is encouraged so that an accurate estimate of the number of workshop participants can be obtained.  Workshops with low advanced registration will be subject to cancellation.

Cancellation Policy:

If you cancel your registration more than 72 hours before a class, your registration fee will be refunded, less a $35 processing fee. If you do not cancel before the 72 hour deadline your registration fee will not be refunded. You may send a substitute in your place, provided that you inform us of the substitute’s name no later than 24 hours before the training.  No-shows will not have their registration fee refunded.

Payment Policy

UPDATED 2/15/23 – The Transportation Technology Transfer Service now accepts Electronic Check (ACH) payments in addition to credit card payments. While credit card payments are still the preferred payment method, you now have the Electronic Check (ACH) option. Your payment must be received within 5 business days of your registration. If your registration payment is not received by then, you will not be guaranteed registration for the conference.
